The Rise of Social Media

The effects of social media and technology on today's youth

Introduction

In recent years, social media has become an unavoidable constant in the lives of the youth. Technology has advanced in ways that were never deemed possible or fathomable and as a result, the world has quickly become a place run by social media and technology. This immense involvement in technological worlds has led to observable differences in human behavior and interaction. The effects of the real world and the world that lives within our phone screens colliding have been most prominent when analyzing the changes in behavior within today’s youth. Since the rise of social media, a growing number of young individuals would rather hide behind a screen than participate in real human interactions. At dinners, at parties, and at intimate gatherings phones are a constant and people are disconnected. For these reasons, it is clear to see that the rise of social media in the past 10 years has impacted the adolescent youth’s ability and desire to participate in in-person interactions.
There are multiple aspects and elements to every human life. Each individual has their family life, their school life, their friendship life, and their relationship life. These multiple lives can also be interpreted as multiple selves that live within each individual person. However, social media has had a profound impact on each of these aspects of human life and has dramatically changed the manner in which they are lived. A teenager’s relationship with their family, school, friends, and significant others has been dramatically impacted by the rise of social media. One does not have to dig too deep to find that social media’s impact on these relationships has led to an evident emotional disconnect within today’s youth.
Recent generations have been brought up completely surrounded by technology. This upbringing has led to them being intrinsically comforted by the technology that has surrounded them in their lives. For instance, nowadays, how often to do you see a kid at a restaurant with an iPad to accompany them? Odds are that your answer is along the lines of more often than not. This generation of kids is known as generation Z, and they are known to be the most extreme case of technological disconnect. By definition, this generation consists of all humans born after 1991 (Yadav, Rai 111). These humans are classified as a generation that grew up with technology as a comfortable constant rather than a new tool to get used to (Yadav, Rai 111). So, what have been the effects of this electronic upbringing on the different aspects of these individual’s lives when being compared to previous generations? This is the question that will be both explored and answered.
